The purpose of this page's Students Forum and FAQ are to allow all postgraduate students to share, ask and discuss any issues related to Directed Research.

These are the Frequently Asked Question (FAQ) shared by Sr. Aini Syahira, President of KEPSA 2019/2020.

1) Who can be my supervisor (SV)?
It is advised for you to find the SV from the same department (e.g.: TESL, TASL). The SV can be your subject's lecturer or any lecturers that are experts in your research area. If you find SV from a different department or Kuliyyah, you might need to justify in a meeting during the concept paper's approval the reasons for doing so.


2) How do I approach the potential supervisor(s)?
Do some background checking on the lecturers and find the suitable one. Next, you can come out with a brief idea of what research you plan to do and propose to your SV while seeking his/her approval to be your SV. This process will be easier if your SV is the lecturer of your subject.


3) Can I make my subject's assignment into DR?
Definitely yes! Work smart! Discuss with your supervisor and you might have to add a few more aspects to upgrade your assignment into DR. You will save so much energy and money by doing so since you do not have to start from scratch.


4) How much does it cost for proofreading and formatting?
We have to admit that this process cost us quite a lot. As for the proofreading, the average is RM5-9 per page. As for the formatting that is provided by Bro Firdaus in PG Office, he charged RM1.50 per page. We highly recommend you use his service since some students use other services, and they redo it due to some errors. Mr. Firdaus (PG staff) can be reached at firdausroslan57@gmail.com.


5) Can I use the proofread service provided outside?
Nope! Better to do it within IIUM Community (IIUM Academy, IIUM Lecturer, etc). However, if you really need to do so, please confirm it with the PG Office. Do not waste your money because if the office does not approve the proofreader, you have to redo it.


6) Can my supervisor be the proofreader?
Nope! There will be a section in the form where your supervisor and proofreader need to sign. They cannot be the same person.


7) How many semesters does it take to finish the DR?
It depends on your capability and support from your SV. If you start from scratch, we would usually say it takes one to two semesters to finish it (starting from submitting the concept paper until the final submission). Some happen to be four semesters. Our journey is different from each other indeed.

After Finalized with supervisor, What's next? Abstract in Arabic, Proofread and Formatting

 Assalamualaikum w.b.t Dear Br./Sr. This is my personal experience for Directed Research process. After completing and finalized your Directed Research paper, you need to submit your paper for Abstract Arabic Translation, Proofread and Formatting. For these three steps were important and necessary before submitting hardcopy. All steps need to be done by REGISTERED/CERTIFIED person by IIUM.
